Next Event:
Woolie Boolie

on Sunday March 21st.

Sunday March 21st we are meeting at the Lake Oroville Spillway Ramp for the annual revival of the Woolie Boolie, courtesy of Nacra sailor Mike Peavy and Cycle Sports of Chico. There is water in Lake Oroville and we are ready to go. Let's rig at 10 o'clock and be on the water at 11 o'clock. The water will be cold so wetsuits/warm clothing are advisable. Life jackets are, of course, mandatory. The course generally requires ducking the green bridge on Highway 162; the floating bathrooms or Foreman Island may also be marks. Bring PFDs that fit.
Future Event: MHRA Chico Classic on Saturday May 1st and Sunday May 2nd.

This is the annual season opener for MHRA at Black Butte Lake. Racing is only for multihulls but all are invited. This is a two-day regatta and most sailors camp at Buckhorn campground. Put it on your calendar.
View the Lake Oroville level plot from January 1, 2009 to today

The spillway ramp is marginally open at 700 feet, The current elevation is 720 feet (March 1), only 180 feet below the top! Let's hope El Nino continues to kick in, Southern California decides to conserve, and they stop growing alfalfa and rice in the San Joaquin desert.

An enthused group of sailors and friends met in the morning Thermalito Afterbay rain at ten o'clock, slowly rigged, and then sailed into 5-7 knots and sunshine until 4 o'clock. The boats included three catamarans, Jason and Paul on the Nacra 5.8, Paul and Karen on the Prindle 18-2, and John on the Nacra 5.2. Greg, crew, and two dogs (but no trimaran) came early and brought us up to speed with the new year. Nick, a new sailor to the area stopped by to sastisfy his curiosity. Herb and Carolyn of the CYC stopped through. Herb went out with Paul and is considering adding a catamaran to his fleet.

John single-handed the Nacra 5.2, including setting up the mast on his own!

Several others from the Paddleheads came by while the boats were out sailing. Mark, Paul's older brother, was the general factotum onshore and went out at the end of the day. In between sailing, the group ate tamales from the Chico Farmer's Market. All in all, it was a surprisingly pleasant sail in later winter. The next event is the Woolie Boolie on Lake Oroville in March.

Welcome to the Butte Sailing Club website. We're a low-key group of sailors. We emphasize recreational sailing and club-level racing. Our boats are trailerable and range in size from ten to twenty-four feet. We emphasize that sailing should be fun. Our focus is on sailing well while helping one another. Water safety is our club's first priority.

In short, the Butte Sailing Club is a place to learn about sailing, engage in spirited racing, and enjoy one another's company both on and off the water. Consider joining us at any of our events. There is a minimal membership fee ($10 per year). Guests boats and crew are welcome at any event without charge. We encourage prospective members with sailboats of all types, as well as those who may be just looking at this terrific way to spend time.

Regardless of where you are, feel free to contact this site for help in rigging or restoring your sailboat. We have been able to help many residents of Northern California get their boats in the water.

Club Rules

Rule #1: Any day on the water is better than a day ashore.
Rule #2: The best boat is the one with you in it.
