Bryan Hamilton came out with his San Juan 24

Bryan and son Joey kept their boat moving even when the wind lightened...

At the very beginning and the end of our day, the wind died off almost completely.

The Hamiltons sailed about half the race but had to retire early, as Joey was not feeling well.

We decided to get out of the launch cove and start our race at the orange bouys near the dam.

Dave Neilsen was very fast on his Laser, but decided not to finish the race when the wind died off after about 2 hours of racing...

Brothers, Paul and Mark Melcon sailed Paul's Prindle 18-2 for the day.

Jason Smith and Paul Thurman sailed their Nacra 5.8 with an assymetrical spinnaker.

These guys are figuring out their new Nacra very quickly. It's a big jump from their old Hobie 16.

When that chute is up and trimmed correctly, that boat flies!

They came by so fast, Grant barely had time to get our camera turned on...

With his 164% genoa up, that San Juan 24 is a real light air performer!

Dave Neilsen takes a bow prior to the start of our race.

Sitting all the time can be a bit confining...

..But hey. The Laser is a Sit on boat. Note the excellent neoprene attire.

Mark Barr with sons Grant and Chris were first to finish on this day, sailing their Thistle.

Paul Ritchie sailed with his wife Gisela and freind, Mike Maddox. Here, he looks like he's about to clobber a Laser, but it's just the camera angle (I'm told).

In the skipper's meeting, we agreed to allow anyone who stops off at the floating toilet to subtract their "rest" time from their overall time. There were no takers on this day.

Isn't that Hundter 216 enormous next to a Laser?

Chris (right) did a great job of flying the chute while I dove our Thislte.

The boats separated after the start, each looking for their own lane downwind to Foreman Island.

The boats that went left were hoping for some extra wind along the shore.

On my Thislte, we went straight down the middle and got a gradual header (always positive when going downwind). We were first to the island.

The breeze upwind was about 5 mph with big geographic shifts on each shoreline.

We lucked into a huge windward shift headed for the south shore and made out like bandits. For a while, our lead increased...

On the way upwind towards the dam, we passed Jim Adams and his crew out on Jim's Geery 18. They said hi, but did not have enough time to race on this day.

After rounding the orange bouys near the dam, our course was down to the floating bathroom cove. We had our spinny up again and had a pretty view of the other boats following us.

At this point, the Melcon's Prindle started gaining on us.

They sailed past us, headed to the bathroom bouy shortly after we rounded it.

The nacra 5.8 was behind the Prindle at this point. It won't be long before they get that spinnker and the sailing angles figured out. Then, watch out!

On my boat, Chris pretended to snooze on our last tack to the finish line. We had been racing for almost 2 1/2 hrs, so I'm sure he was a bit weary.

Second to finish were Mark and Paul Melcon. This photo was taken as they approached the dock.

Mark and Paul displayed good warm gear. This is a must when you sail in January!

Paul and Jason finished third, about 10 minutes behind the Prindle. Their boat was lit up brilliantly in the afternoon sun
(Overexposed I should say).

Paul, Gisela and Mike finished in the Hunter in 2:50:13. Pretty darned fast for 11.5 miles in light air!

This shot was actually taken as we were launching. Out of order...
Sorry about that.

This is the 11.5 mile route we sailed on this beautiful winter day. If you missed this event, plan on coming out with the BSC on Feb. 18th for our Tour du Afterbay.

This wide view of the day's route shows from Right to Left, Oroville Lake, the Thermalito Forebay and the Thermalito Afterbay.
